Destination: Lake Oulujärvi and Ärjänsaari island
Explore the hidden gem of Northern Finland – Oulujärvi and Ärjänsaari.
Oulujärvi is the fifth largest lake in Finland, renowned for its vastness and natural splendor. Situated in Northern Finland, it offers breathtaking lakeside landscapes, opportunities for fishing, water sports, and a tranquil environment perfect for relaxation.
Ärjänsaari island is located in Lake Oulujärvi and is one of the finest natural attractions in the whole of Finland. This island of countless stories is a stunning location surrounded by steep sandbanks. On your way to Ärjänsaari island you can enjoy the open Lake Oulujärvi sceneries and listen to stories about the island’s history.
Ärjänsaari is around 4km (2.4 miles) long and over here you’ll find over 10 kilometres of long sandy beaches. A hiking route circles the island and there are several spots for camp fires. If it happens to be a warm summer day, there is nothing quite like digging your feet into the burning island sand.
Steamship SS Kouta
Steamship Kouta is the northernmost steamship in Finland and whole Europe. Ship and it’s original steam engine were built in 1921 and the ship has been steaming since.
Steamship Kouta served as a passenger ship between Sotkamo and Kajaani from 1921 to 1936 (named Wuokatti II). At that time there were no roads in northern Finland and steamship was the easiest and fastest way to travel, deliver post and goods to market.
In 1937 the ship was renewed into a tug boat and given it’s name Kouta. For the next 30 years it pulled lografts on lake Oulujärvi. In the late sixties motor boats took the place of old steamers and for ten years Kouta was unused in the harbor while many of the old steamboats were sold to klunker. In 1975 it finally found new owners, who restored it as a passanger ship and the ship has been operative since 1985.
Our crew will tell stories of the history the ship and also all the passengers have a possibility to visit the ship’s engine room where our engine master tells about the function of steam engine in practice.
Kouta has capacity 60 persons, a salon with meeting facilities, a bar, a small sauna, and wireless internet.
